O2 calls its answerphone service Voicemail 901, and it's ready to go on all new O2 phones. Everything runs through the short code 901: listening to messages, recording a personal greeting, and managing your PIN. If it's ever been switched off, one free call to 1750 turns it back on. Here's the complete setup, step by step.
Voicemail 901 is switched on by default. If calls aren't reaching your answerphone, dial 1750 (free) from your O2 mobile to activate it. To switch it off later, dial 1760.
Call 901 from your O2 phone. New messages play first; to reach the menus instead, press the * (star) key.
From the main menu, select option 3. Then press 2 to record a full personal greeting (or 3 to record just a name tag that slots into O2's standard greeting).
Speak after the tone and follow the prompts to review and save. You can change your greeting as often as you like — O2 doesn't limit it.
To replace an existing greeting, dial 901, press *, choose option 3, then 2, and record the new version — it takes effect immediately. Setting a PIN is under option 4 of the same menu, and it's worth doing before you need to check messages from another phone.
From abroad, dial +44 7802 090901 and enter your PIN. From a UK landline or another mobile, you can also call your own O2 number, press * while your greeting plays, and enter your PIN. Forgotten the PIN? Text RESET to 802901 and O2 sends a temporary one.
Dial 1760 (free) to switch Voicemail 901 off, and 1750 to switch it back on. You can also fine-tune when calls divert: for example **61*901*11*30# extends ring time to 30 seconds before voicemail picks up, and ##002# cancels all diverts entirely.
O2 records greetings through the handset, so there's no upload button — but there's a reliable workaround used by thousands of businesses:

Dial 1750 free from your mobile to switch Voicemail 901 on, and 1760 to switch it off. Once off, unanswered calls simply ring out and you'll still see missed-call notifications.
O2 has no direct file-upload option. The workaround is to start recording your greeting via 901 and play a professionally produced MP3 from a second device held close to your phone's microphone. A well-mastered file captured this way sounds nearly identical over a phone line.
Text RESET to 802901. You'll receive a temporary PIN which you must change before you can listen to messages. You can change your PIN any time by calling 901 and choosing option 4.
