giffgaff voicemail is switched on automatically when you activate your SIM, and it all runs through 443. The menus are shared with O2's network (giffgaff runs on O2), but the codes are giffgaff's own. One quirk worth knowing: even with a personal greeting recorded, giffgaff's system prompt — “please leave a message after the tone” — still plays after your recording. Here's the complete setup.
Call 443 from your giffgaff phone. On your first call you must create a PIN of 4–10 digits: enter it and press #, then confirm and press # again. Voicemail can't be used until the PIN is set.
Once your PIN is accepted, press the * (star) key to reach the main menu: 2 to listen to messages, 3 for greetings, 4 for mailbox settings.
Select option 3 (change your mailbox greetings), then press 2 to record a new personal greeting. You can also press 3 for a temporary greeting — handy for holidays — or 4 to record just your name.
Press 0 to start recording, speak your greeting, press 0 again to stop, then press 2 to save (or 3 to re-record). Remember giffgaff's own “leave a message after the tone” prompt plays after your greeting, so don't include your own version of that line.
To replace your greeting, dial 443, press *, choose option 3, then 2, and record the new version. The temporary greeting under option 3 is worth using for annual leave — when you delete it, your regular greeting comes back automatically.
You'll need your PIN to check messages from another phone or abroad — and on some overseas networks voicemail access requires it regardless. Forgotten it? Text RESET to 802443, receive a temporary 5-digit PIN, then call voicemail from your giffgaff phone to set a new one.
Dial 1626 to switch voicemail off and 1616 to switch it back on — both free from your giffgaff phone. To give yourself more time to answer before voicemail picks up, dial **61*443*11*30# (replace 30 with 5–30 seconds, in steps of 5).
giffgaff records greetings through the handset, so there's no upload button — but there's a reliable workaround used by thousands of businesses:
Phone lines compress audio heavily, so a well-mastered recording captured this way sounds virtually identical to a direct upload.

“Hi, you've reached [Your Name]. I can't get to the phone right now, so please leave your name and number and I'll call you back as soon as I can.”
Hear This Script“Thanks for calling [Your Business]. We're probably helping another customer right now. Leave your name and number and we'll ring you back — usually within a couple of hours during opening times.”

Dial 443 from your giffgaff phone. On your first call you'll set a PIN of 4–10 digits, after which you can press * to reach the main menu.
Dial 443, press the * key for the main menu, choose option 3 (greetings), then press 2 to record a new greeting. Press 0 to start and stop the recording and 2 to save it.
giffgaff's system message — “please leave a message after the tone” — always plays after your personal greeting and can't be removed. Keep your own greeting short and let giffgaff's prompt handle the instructions.
Dial 1626 from your giffgaff phone to switch voicemail off, and 1616 to reactivate it. Both calls are free in the UK.
There's no direct upload. Start recording via 443 (option 3, then 2, then 0) and play a professionally produced MP3 from a second device held close to your phone's microphone. Over a compressed phone line the result sounds nearly identical to a direct upload.
